What this visa is
Germany splits self-employment into two categories. Freiberufler covers the liberal professions: engineers, IT consultants, designers, journalists, architects and similar. Gewerbetreibende covers commercial businesses. Freelancers apply with client letters of intent showing they can support themselves; founders apply with a business plan showing economic interest or regional need. Berlin has the best known freelance process, particularly for creatives and IT contractors.
Germany's residence act has long recognised that independent professionals and founders create economic value that employment-based routes miss.
